Meeting with Mr. John Hickok, International Outreach Librarian, Library Faculty, California State University Fullerton

On September 22, 2022, leaders of Da Nang Union of Friendship Organizations (DAFO) and the Vietnam - America Friendship Association of Da Nang City, including Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Binh - Chairman of DAFO and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen, Vice Chairwoman of DAFO and Vice Chair of the Vietnam - America Friendship Association of Da Nang met with Mr. John Hickok, International Outreach Librarian, Library Faculty, California State University Fullerton (USA), Member of the American Library Association, International Relations Committee, and Mrs. Phan Thi Thu Nga, Deputy Director of Thai Nam Education Service Company, Member of Executive Committee of the Vietnam - America Friendship Association of Da Nang.

DAFO’s Chairman Nguyen Ngoc Binh briefly introduced the role and outstanding activities of DAFO and the Vietnam - America Friendship Association of Da Nang in the fields of peace, solidarity, friendship and cooperation between the people of Da Nang city and people of countries around the world, including those of the United States. He also introduced people-to-people exchange activities with America, especially the SUNY Brockport Vietnam Program. It was the Educational Cooperative Program between DAFO and SUNY Brockport (USA) in bringing American students to Da Nang to study politics, history, culture and language of Viet Nam, and to participate in social activities, such as giving gifts and helping Agent Orange victims, disadvantaged children, and lonely, elderly people.

 



At the same time, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Binh suggested that Mr. John Hickok should work as a bridge to connect DAFO and California State University, Fullerton so that both sides can set up a friendship and cooperation relationship in order to jointly organize activities to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the people of Da Nang, Viet Nam and the American people.

 

Some activities suggested consist of finding funds to modernize two school libraries in Da Nang, organizing a session to exchange and share experiences about libraries for school librarians, holding a program to bring students of California State University to Da Nang to study and exchange ideas; and organizing an English class for civil servants, public employees of the city.

 

Mr. John Hickok expressed his pleasure on visiting DAFO and the Vietnam - America Friendship Association of Da Nang for the first time. He was interested in the SUNY Brockport Vietnam Program in order to propose to California State University, Fullerton that they implement a similar program with DAFO. He said he would convey the suggestions from DAFO to leaders and professors of California State University. He also emphasized that personally, he would continue to donate books to children as he had done in Da Nang in past years and he would participate in teaching English and training about library work.
